Press Secretary and Director of Communications

DFL Caucus

Full-time Press Secretary and Director of Communications position in the DFL Caucus of the Minnesota House of Representatives.

This position acts as key liaison with members of the DFL caucus on caucus communications matters and as the primary point of contact for reporters and editors. Reports to the Senior Advisor to the Leader and Director of Strategic Affairs and works in coordination with caucus leadership and staff to advance communications goals. Provides strategic vision and leadership while working to evaluate and implement media strategies to effectively execute the strategic communications plan. Regularly drafts and circulates talking points; provides written materials for Leadership; and arranges press conferences and media availabilities. Represents the DFL Leadership at meetings with outside organizations and individuals, and media outlets including the Capitol press as necessary. Performs other duties and special projects as assigned.

Strong past communications experience, along with the ability to work well with leadership, caucus members, and staff, is critical. Knowledge of legislative and political process, government agencies and the overall political scene so as to accurately interpret and anticipate political developments that may affect the DFL caucus is advantageous. Demonstrated cultural competency and the ability to communicate effectively with individuals and audiences from Minnesota’s diverse backgrounds is expected. Proficiency in Word is essential, while experience with social media management tools, press databases, and spreadsheet or database applications is beneficial. Frequent public contact, communications and human relations skills a must. Must be willing to work extended and non-standard hours as required to meet the demands of the legislative session. Prior supervisory or team leadership experience — especially leading communications departments, including digital and social media communications — is a plus.

This is a full-time, at-will position that works in person with the possibility of some interim remote work consistent with House policies and department needs. The House offers a competitive salary and opportunities for ongoing professional development. Starting classification and annual salary commensurate with relevant experience. Press Secretary and Director of Communications range $91,321.92 - $164,379.36. The starting salary range for an entry-level Press Secretary and Director of Communications is generally between $91,321.92 and $100,454.16, depending on relevant experience.
